A Regional Internet Registry (RIR) is an organization overseeing the allocation and registration of Internet number resources within a particular region of the world. Resources include IP addresses (both IPv4 and IPv6) and autonomous system numbers (for use in BGP routing).

There are currently five RIRs in operation:

  • American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) for North America and parts of the Caribbean
  • RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) for Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia
  • Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) for Asia and the Pacific region
  • Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) for Latin America and parts of the Caribbean region
  • African Network Information Centre (AfriNIC) for Africa

Mind Boggling

The IPv4 address space is a 32 bit field. There are 4,294,967,296 unique values, considered in this context as a sequence of 256 “/8s”, where each “/8” corresponds to 16,777,216 unique address values. As noted in RFC 5735 a number of address blocks are reserved for uses outside ‘conventional’ use in the public Internet as unicast identity tokens. In adding up these special purpose use address reservations there are the equivalent of 35.078 /8 address blocks in this category. This is composed of 16 /8 blocks reserved for use in multicast scenarios, 16 /8 blocks reserved for some unspecified future use, 1 /8 block (0.0.0.0/8) for local identification, a single /8 block reserved for loopback (127.0.0.0/8), and a /8 block reserved for private use (10.0.0.0/8). Smaller address blocks are also reserved for other special uses.

Sharepoint Standard vs Enterprise:
The gist of it is that with Enterprise CAL (Client Access License) you get:

– Business Data Catalog
– Forms Server
– KPI Support
– Excel Services

Detailed explanation is available at this spreadsheet

Note that anyone start with Standard and at any point upgrade to Enterprise by simply applying the Enterprise key. There is no need to re-install any software or anything, it basically enables the Enterprise features..

I’ve made a wrong plan for installing sharepoint on my DC box.. it requires a local service account for search & indexing function in both the content and database level.. : (

By default, the search service is disabled in WSS 3.0. In order to enable it, goto your SharePoint Central Administration page and under the Operations tab, goto the “Services on the Server” list and click on WSS Search.

  • Service Account – You cannot use any built in accounts when specifiying the Service Account, however you can use local accounts. One account you can choose to use is the default Administrator account on your server, “myserver\Administrator”.
  • Content Access Account – Use an account that has full read access to your SharePoint Content Databases. As a security precaution, try not to use an account that has write permissions on the database. For example: “mydomain\sqlserveruser”.
  • Search Database – In most cases the default settings will work, change them as required.
  • Indexing Schedule – No new files will be searchable until they are indexed, depending on the load you wish to put on the server you can set this to be done as often as you want.

Upon submitting the form, the search service should start and begin indexing the content in your SharePoint site. Now would be a good time to install the Adobe IFilter to allow your search service be able to index PDF files, the earlier you install it the better, since it will only recognize PDF files added after the addon was installed.

When we turn on a water tap, we expect to see water flow from it. When we press down a light switch, we expect to see light fill the room. Not so many years ago these very basic things were not as reliable as they are today. We know instinctively that the advances in technology have made them reliable enough to be considered a utility. But it isn’t just the technology that makes the services reliable. It is how they are managed. This is service management!
The use of IT today has become the utility of business. Simply having the best technology will not ensure it provides utility-like reliability. Professional, responsive, value-driven service management is what brings this quality of service to the business. The Service Lifecycle contains five elements as each of which rely on service principles, processes, roles and performance measures. The Service Lifecycle uses a hub and spoke design, with Service Strategy at the hub, Service Design, Transition and Operation as the revolving lifecycle stages, and anchored by Continual Service Improvement. Each part of the lifecycle exerts influence on the other and relies on the other for inputs and feedback. In this way, a constant set of checks and balances throughout the Service Lifecycle ensures that as business demand changes with business need, the services can adapt and respond effectively to them.

At the heart of the Service Lifecycle is the key principle – all services must provide measurable value to business objectives and outcomes. This has become extremely important today as IT organizations must operate themselves as businesses in order to demonstrate a clear return on investment and equate service performance with business value to the customer.

I’m truly amazed when i tried this.. it really reflects on granularity of various modules installed.. W2K8 server’s installation concept as role / feature services that can be easily pluck in / out… it really made life so much easier..and of course.. easier to deploy to certain extent..

Overview of Web Platform Installer:
The Web Platform Installer provides an easy way to quickly install and customize all the software you need to develop or deploy web sites and applications on a Windows machine. The tool automatically analyses what your system currently has installed, allows you to easily mark additional components to be added, and then automates installing them all at once when you click the install button (saving you from having to manually install each one yourself)

In addition to downloading the application, the web platform installer will create a new site/application root and configure the appropriate site settings and optionally install the database.

If you haven’t downloaded the Web Platform Installer yet I’d recommend taking a look at it. I think you’ll find it makes it much easier to configure and get a box up and running, and makes it much easier to find and install the various components of the Windows web server stack, as well as find and install applications to use on top of it…

Last saturday’s BCP observation yet again some people mentioning about the mapping of shared folder / printer issue.. apparently they all keep repeating the same observation to the users.. if i’m the user i’ll reply this back to IT and told them to work out some automation for me… actually it can be done using a logon scripts.. it’s a useful tools for configuring desktop environments for users.. such scripts can be used for include mapping network drives, connecting to shared printers, gathering system information, synchronizing system clocks, and so on. In fact, just about anything can do from the command-line can be done using a logon script..

Logon scripts have been around for a while and most administrators of Windows-based networks have had occasion to use them. On Windows NT domain-based networks things were simple: if a user needed to have his environment configured using a logon script, the administrator would first write a logon script using the batch programming language, which has been around since the days of MS-DOS. Once written, this script was saved using a .bat extension to make it executable, but to make it work for a particular user the script needed to be found in the NETLOGON share of the domain controller to which the user’s account was authenticated. In Windows NT this NETLOGON share corresponded to the %systemroot%\system32\repl\import\scripts folder, and by placing the script in this folder on the PDC it was automatically replicated to all BDC’s in the domain. Once this was done, the administrator only had to add the name of the script to the Logon Script Name field on the User Environment Profile dialog box using User Manager for Domains.
