i’ve setup a tiny environment consist of a few routers (with serial link, encap frame relay, p-2-p practice, and uh.. a router for dhcp) , a switch and 3 VMs (all in vlan1 for simplicity sake). the routing are all configured as static (practice makes perfect), and serial connections are all using /30 subnet.. i’ve also enabled SNMP (community exsolusi RW) and syslog for all the routers switches (in XP too).. the connection to the Internet marked as a cloud (192.168.137.1 – it’s a logical loopback adapter with a shared connection configured with my current wireless interface), and also the NATting on R1 is set to standard ACL (access-list 1 permit any) for the rest of routers and VMs to be able to connect to the Internet…
R4’s ip helper address is pointing to 10.100.74.41 (dhcp), once the VMs are rebooted, it automatically binds IP which are set earlier in the pool (VMs are using shared vmware adapter 8, host-only), some of the common parameters such as dns server were set too; on which i’ve told them to look up for a public dns 4.2.2.2..
Monitoring tools e.g cacti, zenoss as well as kiwi syslog server (from solarwinds) were quite easy to configure and familiarize as well.. pretty much sums up this weekend’s activity…
